This medication is used by people with a certain inherited bleeding problem (hemophilia A or B) to help prevent or lessen how often they have bleeding problems. This medication works by lowering the levels of a natural protein (antithrombin). This helps produce more clotting protein (thrombin) which helps prevent bleeding.

If you use estrogen-containing products, these may also increase your risk. Before using this medication, if you have any of these conditions report them to your doctor or pharmacist. To reduce your risk, your doctor will order blood clotting tests before you start using this medication and while you are using it. Get medical help right away if any of these side effects occur: shortness of breath/rapid breathing, chest/jaw/left arm pain, unusual sweating, sudden dizziness/fainting, pain/swelling/warmth in the groin/calf, sudden/severe headaches, sudden vision changes, weakness on one side of the body, trouble speaking, or confusion.
