Darbepoetin alfa is prescribed to treat anemia, which is a condition characterized by a low red blood cell count. It is particularly useful for individuals with chronic kidney failure and those undergoing chemotherapy for certain cancers that do not affect the bone marrow or blood cells. The drug's primary benefit is its ability to lessen the need for blood transfusions. It functions by sending signals to the bone marrow to increase the production of red blood cells, mimicking the action of the natural hormone erythropoietin in your body that helps prevent anemia.

The lowest effective dose of this medication should be used. When used to treat anemia related to cancer, darbepoetin alfa may also increase the risk of death and/or cause your tumor to grow faster.
