mineral oil

Mineral oil is used to treat constipation. It is known as a lubricant laxative. It works by keeping water in the stool and intestines. This helps to soften the stool and also makes it easier for stool to pass through the intestines. This medication should not be used by older adults, children younger than 6 years, or by people who are bedridden.

If your doctor has directed you to use this medication, remember that your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: cough that doesn't go away, difficulty breathing. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
