Tremfya Pen Warnings

When using the TREMFYA® (guselkumab) pen, it's important to be aware of certain safety considerations to ensure proper use and minimize potential risks.

Hypersensitivity Reactions: Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported with TREMFYA®. Symptoms may include fainting, dizziness, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, skin rash, hives, or itching. If you experience any of these symptoms, discontinue use immediately and seek emergency medical attention. Do not use TREMFYA® if you have had a serious allergic reaction to guselkumab or any of its ingredients.

Infections: TREMFYA® may lower your immune system's ability to fight infections, increasing your risk. Before starting treatment, your healthcare provider should check for infections and tuberculosis (TB). If you have a history of TB or active TB, treatment should be initiated before beginning TREMFYA®. Monitor for signs of infection during and after treatment, such as fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, shortness of breath, weight loss, or burning during urination. Inform your healthcare provider promptly if any of these symptoms occur.

Tuberculosis (TB) Evaluation: Prior to starting TREMFYA®, patients should be evaluated for TB infection. If latent TB is detected, appropriate treatment should be initiated before administering TREMFYA®. Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of active TB during and after treatment. TREMFYA® should not be administered to patients with active TB infection.

Immunizations: Before beginning TREMFYA® treatment, ensure all age-appropriate vaccinations are up to date. Live vaccines should be avoided during treatment, as medications that affect the immune system may increase the risk of infection following administration of live vaccines.

Injection Site Reactions: While generally mild to moderate, reactions at the injection site can occur. To minimize discomfort, rotate injection sites and avoid areas that are tender, bruised, red, or affected by psoriasis.

Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions when using the TREMFYA® pen and report any concerns or adverse reactions promptly.

Tremfya Pen Side Effects

When using this medication, you might experience some common side effects such as bruising, redness, itching, pain, or swelling at the injection site. These effects are typically mild and temporary, but if they persist or worsen, it’s important to inform your healthcare provider. Most people using this medication do not encounter serious side effects, which can be reassuring. However, there are some serious side effects to be aware of. Signs of liver problems, such as persistent nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach or abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes or skin, and dark urine, require immediate medical attention. Additionally, this medication may reduce your immune system's ability to fight infections, increasing the risk of serious infections. Be vigilant for symptoms like a sore throat that doesn’t go away, fever, or chills, and seek medical advice promptly if they occur. Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to this medication is possible. Symptoms to watch for include rash, itching or swelling, especially of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing. These symptoms demand urgent medical intervention. While this isn’t an exhaustive list of potential side effects, any unexpected or concerning reactions should be discussed with your healthcare provider to ensure your safety.

Tremfya Pen Interactions

When using Tremfya (guselkumab) delivered via a pre-filled pen, it's important to be aware of potential interactions with other medications and substances. Tremfya is an immunosuppressant, which means it can affect your body's ability to fight infections.

Concomitant Immunosuppressive Therapies:

Combining Tremfya with other immunosuppressive treatments, including biologic drugs or phototherapy, has not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, the safety and effectiveness of such combinations are not established. Using multiple immunosuppressants together may increase the risk of infections. It's essential to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you're currently taking to assess potential risks.

Live Vaccines:

Live vaccines contain weakened forms of viruses or bacteria and are generally not recommended during Tremfya treatment. Receiving a live vaccine while on Tremfya could increase your risk of developing the infection the vaccine is designed to prevent. Before starting Tremfya, ensure that all your vaccinations are up to date. If you require a live vaccine, it's advisable to wait at least 12 weeks after your last Tremfya dose before receiving the vaccine and to resume Tremfya treatment at least two weeks after vaccination.

Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) Substrates:

Tremfya may influence the activity of certain liver enzymes known as CYP450 enzymes, which are responsible for metabolizing various drugs. While studies suggest a low potential for significant interactions with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, and CYP1A2 enzymes, the impact on drugs processed by the CYP2D6 enzyme remains uncertain. If you're taking medications that are metabolized by these enzymes, especially those with a narrow therapeutic index (where small changes in drug levels can have significant effects), your doctor may monitor your drug levels and adjust dosages as necessary.

Alcohol Consumption:

There are no known direct interactions between Tremfya and alcohol. However, both can cause similar side effects, such as headaches and diarrhea. Additionally, alcohol may exacerbate the conditions Tremfya is prescribed to treat, like psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It's advisable to discuss your alcohol consumption with your healthcare provider to determine what's safe for you during treatment.

Herbal Supplements and Vitamins:

Currently, there are no specific reports of interactions between Tremfya and herbal supplements or vitamins. However, this doesn't guarantee that interactions won't occur. Always inform your healthcare provider about any supplements or vitamins you're taking to ensure they don't interfere with your treatment.

General Recommendations:

  • Inform Your Healthcare Provider: Provide a complete list of all medications, supplements, and vitamins you're taking before starting Tremfya.

  • Monitor for Infections: Be vigilant for signs of infection, such as fever, chills, or persistent cough, and report them to your doctor promptly.

  • Vaccination Status: Ensure your vaccinations are current before initiating Tremfya therapy.

  • Regular Check-ups: Attend all scheduled appointments so your healthcare provider can monitor your response to Tremfya and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.

By being proactive and maintaining open communication with your healthcare team, you can help minimize potential interactions and ensure the safe and effective use of Tremfya.
