Varenicline Tartrate (starter) FAQs
Is varenicline tartrate the same as Chantix?

Yes, varenicline tartrate is the generic name for the brand name medication Chantix. They are the same medication used to help people quit smoking.

As of the latest information available, the Chantix Starter Pack has been discontinued in the United States. This decision was made due to concerns about the presence of a nitrosamine impurity, N-nitroso-varenicline, above acceptable levels. Patients seeking smoking cessation options should consult with their healthcare provider for alternative treatments.

The most serious side effect of varenicline is the potential for neuropsychiatric symptoms, including changes in behavior, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, and suicidal thoughts or actions. It is important for individuals taking varenicline to be monitored for any changes in mood or behavior and to seek medical attention if they experience any concerning symptoms.

Yes, a generic version of Chantix, known as varenicline, is available.

Continuing to smoke while taking Chantix (varenicline) may reduce the effectiveness of the medication in helping a person quit smoking. Chantix is designed to help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, making it easier to stop smoking. However, some individuals may still smoke during the initial phase of treatment as they gradually reduce their smoking habits. It is important to follow the healthcare provider's instructions and set a quit date to maximize the chances of successfully quitting smoking. If there are concerns or difficulties, it is advisable to discuss them with a healthcare provider.
