Zafirlukast, marketed as Accolate, is prescribed for the long-term management of asthma symptoms in individuals aged 5 and older. It is taken orally in tablet form, twice daily, and is designed to improve lung function over time. Zafirlukast is not a rescue medication and should not be used during an asthma attack; instead, use a quick-relief inhaler like albuterol as directed by your healthcare provider. This medication works as a leukotriene receptor antagonist, blocking inflammatory chemicals known as leukotrienes that can lead to airway narrowing and excess mucus production. While generally well-tolerated, the most common side effect is headache. Zafirlukast is available in both brand-name and generic versions.
