Anbesol Maximum Strength Warnings
Anbesol Maximum Strength contains benzocaine, a local anesthetic used to relieve oral pain. While effective, it's important to be aware of certain risks associated with its use.
One serious risk is methemoglobinemia, a rare condition where the blood carries less oxygen. Symptoms can include pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, headache, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, dizziness, and fatigue. If you or someone in your care experiences these symptoms after using Anbesol, seek immediate medical attention.
Do not use Anbesol if you have a history of allergic reactions to local anesthetics like procaine, butacaine, benzocaine, or other "caine" anesthetics. Additionally, this product should not be used for teething or in children under 2 years of age.
When using Anbesol, avoid contact with the eyes, do not exceed the recommended dosage, and do not use for more than 7 days unless directed by a doctor or dentist. If sore mouth symptoms do not improve in 7 days, or if irritation, pain, or redness persists or worsens, or if swelling, rash, or fever develops, stop use and consult a doctor.
Keep Anbesol out of reach of children. If more than the intended amount is accidentally swallowed, seek medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
Anbesol Maximum Strength Side Effects
When using this medication, you may experience slight burning, tingling, or stinging sensations. These are common side effects and typically mild; however, if they persist or worsen, it is advisable to seek medical guidance. It is important to be aware that this medication has rarely been associated with a serious blood disorder known as methemoglobinemia. Individuals with breathing difficulties, certain blood disorders, or who smoke may be at higher risk. Symptoms of this condition can appear shortly after using the medication and may include pale or bluish skin, unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, headache, and confusion. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to stop using the medication and seek immediate medical attention. While a severe allergic reaction to this drug is uncommon, it is important to be vigilant for symptoms such as rash, itching or swelling (particularly of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. If these occur, obtaining urgent medical help is essential. Most people using this medication do not encounter serious side effects, and the benefits often outweigh the risks. If you notice any side effects not mentioned here, consulting your healthcare provider is recommended to ensure your safety and well-being.
Anbesol Maximum Strength Interactions
Anbesol Maximum Strength contains Benzocaine, a local anesthetic used to relieve oral pain. While generally safe when used as directed, it's important to be aware of potential interactions with other medications.
Combining Anbesol with other local anesthetics or medications structurally related to amide-type local anesthetics, such as certain antiarrhythmic drugs like Mexiletine, can lead to additive toxic effects. This means that using these substances together may increase the risk of side effects. Additionally, medications like Erythromycin and Itraconazole can increase the toxicity of oral Lidocaine, another local anesthetic. Although Anbesol contains benzocaine, not lidocaine, it's advisable to exercise caution and consult a healthcare provider if you're taking these medications. Furthermore, drugs that reduce the clearance of local anesthetics, such as Cimetidine or beta-blockers, may lead to higher plasma concentrations of these anesthetics when used in repeated high doses over a long period. However, such interactions are generally not of clinical importance following short-term treatment with topical benzocaine at the recommended dose.
It's also important to note that Anbesol contains chlorocresol, which has been recognized to be incompatible with a range of compounds, including calcium chloride, Codeine Phosphate, diamorphine hydrochloride, papaveretum, quinine hydrochloride, Methylcellulose, and non-ionic surfactants such as cetomacrogol 1000 and polysorbate 80. Therefore, if you're using products containing these substances, consult your healthcare provider before using Anbesol.
To ensure safety, always inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you're currently taking before using Anbesol Maximum Strength. This will help prevent potential interactions and ensure the product is appropriate for your use.
