Cisplatin Warnings
This medication carries several important safety warnings that you should be aware of. Below is a summary of potential risks and precautions associated with its use. It is essential to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.
Kidney Damage: Cisplatin may cause kidney damage, and in severe cases, kidney failure. To mitigate this risk, you will receive fluid infusions before, during, and after each treatment. Your healthcare provider will monitor your kidney function closely. If you notice blood in your urine, difficulty or pain while urinating, or changes in urine color or cloudiness, contact your provider immediately, as these could indicate kidney issues. Those at higher risk include individuals on higher doses, those undergoing prolonged treatment, people over 65, those with a history of kidney problems, and those taking other kidney-affecting medications.
Nerve Issues: This drug can lead to new or worsening nerve problems, particularly in the extremities. These symptoms might start after the initial dose or even weeks post-treatment and may persist. Report any numbness, pain, burning, tingling, tremors, balance issues, or limb weakness to your healthcare provider. Higher doses and longer treatment durations increase the risk, especially for patients over 65.
Nausea and Vomiting: Significant nausea and vomiting may occur, typically starting a few hours after the infusion and lasting up to three days or longer. Anti-nausea medication will be provided to help prevent these symptoms. Follow your provider’s instructions on medication use at home.
Low Blood Cell Counts: Treatment can reduce red and white blood cells and platelets, increasing the risk of anemia, infections, and bleeding. In some cases, low blood cell counts may persist due to bone marrow suppression. Older adults are particularly at risk.
Allergic Reactions: Cisplatin may cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. The risk is higher with increased dosages. If you’ve had allergic reactions to similar drugs, inform your provider. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience throat tightness, breathing difficulties, facial swelling, fever, chills, hives, flushing, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, or dizziness.
Hearing Loss: Repeated doses can lead to hearing issues, which may affect one or both ears and can be more severe in children under 5. Baseline and regular hearing tests will be conducted. Report any ear ringing or hearing changes to your provider. Risk factors include concurrent use of other ototoxic drugs, prior kidney problems, and brain radiation.
Eye Problems: Although rare, some patients may experience vision changes, which are usually reversible post-treatment. Notify your provider about any vision issues.
Secondary Cancer Risk: A rare potential exists for developing secondary cancers, such as blood cancers, following treatment with cisplatin. Discuss any concerns with your provider.
Pregnancy Risks: Cisplatin can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception during treatment and for 11 months after treatment for men, and 14 months for women. Report any pregnancy immediately.
Injection Site Injury: Cisplatin may leak during infusion, causing irritation or damage to nearby tissue. Inform your provider or nurse if you experience pain, swelling, or burning at the injection site.
These warnings are not exhaustive. Always consult your healthcare provider for comprehensive medical advice tailored to your situation.

Is cisplatin a strong chemo?
Yes, cisplatin is considered a strong chemotherapy drug. It is commonly used to treat various types of cancer, including testicular, ovarian, bladder, and lung cancers. Its effectiveness is due to its ability to damage the DNA of cancer cells, preventing them from dividing and growing. However, it can also cause significant side effects, which is why its administration is carefully monitored by healthcare professionals.
What is a serious side effect of cisplatin?
A serious side effect of cisplatin is nephrotoxicity, which refers to kidney damage. It is important for patients receiving cisplatin to have their kidney function monitored regularly.
Do you lose your hair with cisplatin?
Yes, hair loss can be a side effect of cisplatin, although it is not as common as with some other chemotherapy drugs. If hair loss occurs, it is usually temporary, and hair typically grows back after treatment is completed.
Which chemo drugs cause the most hair loss?
Chemotherapy drugs that are most commonly associated with significant hair loss include doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, paclitaxel, and docetaxel. These drugs can cause hair loss on the scalp and may also affect eyebrows, eyelashes, and other body hair. The extent of hair loss can vary depending on the individual and the specific treatment regimen.
How sick does cisplatin make you?
Cisplatin can cause nausea and vomiting, which can be quite severe for some patients. These side effects are common, but the intensity can vary from person to person. Antiemetic medications are often prescribed to help manage these symptoms. It's important for patients to discuss any side effects with their healthcare provider to ensure appropriate management.
