Fluvastatin ER Warnings
This medication comes with important safety and warning information that you should carefully review. If you have any questions or concerns, please consult with your healthcare provider.
Muscle Pain and Damage: Fluvastatin can result in muscle pain and weakness, and in rare cases, it may lead to rhabdomyolysis, a severe condition that can cause kidney damage. This risk is elevated in individuals aged 65 and older, those with uncontrolled hypothyroidism, existing kidney problems, or those on high doses of fluvastatin. The risk also increases when taken with other medications that cause muscle issues or interact with fluvastatin.
Liver Issues: An increase in liver enzyme levels has been observed in some individuals taking fluvastatin, which may indicate liver damage. While these changes are often temporary and symptom-free, serious liver conditions, including liver failure, can occur. Individuals with a history of liver problems or those who consume large quantities of alcohol are at a higher risk.
Elevated Blood Sugar Levels: There is some evidence suggesting that statins, including fluvastatin, can raise blood sugar levels, potentially leading to increased hemoglobin A1C levels. Despite this, healthcare professionals generally agree that the cardiovascular benefits of statins outweigh this risk, particularly for those with high blood sugar.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Fluvastatin is not recommended during pregnancy due to the risk of harm to an unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, discontinue use and inform your healthcare provider. Discuss alternative treatments if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Contraindications: This medication should not be used in the following situations due to serious health risks. Consult your healthcare provider if any of these apply to you:
- Existing liver problems, including liver failure or severe liver cirrhosis.
- Persistent, unexplained high liver enzyme levels.
Ensure you follow these guidelines and consult your healthcare provider for any concerns or questions regarding the use of this medication.
