Histex-DM is an over-the-counter medication designed to alleviate symptoms associated with the common cold, flu, allergies, hay fever, and other respiratory ailments like sinusitis and bronchitis. This medication combines three active ingredients: dextromethorphan, phenylephrine, and triprolidine. Dextromethorphan acts as a cough suppressant by targeting the brain's cough center, thereby reducing the urge to cough. Phenylephrine serves as a decongestant, helping to alleviate a stuffy nose, while triprolidine, an antihistamine, relieves symptoms such as watery or itchy eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. Histex-DM comes in syrup form and is taken orally every four hours as needed when symptoms arise. It is important to follow dosage instructions carefully to minimize the risk of side effects, which may include drowsiness or dizziness, and in some cases, insomnia. It is not recommended for children under six years, and certain forms are not advised for those under twelve unless directed by a healthcare provider. This medication does not cure or reduce the duration of the common cold.
