norethin-eth estradiol-fe

This combination hormone medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: norethindrone (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). There is a small amount of iron (ferrous fumarate) in each of the 4 inactive pills taken during the fourth week. The inactive pills do not contain any hormones. These pills are meant to keep you in the habit of taking 1 pill each day and do not have enough iron to treat iron deficiency. Besides preventing pregnancy, birth control pills may make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, decrease your risk of ovarian cysts, and also treat acne. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).

Warnings

When using this medication, there are important safety considerations to keep in mind to minimize potential risks. Below are the key warnings and precautions:

  • Smoking and Age Considerations: If you are over 35 years old and use tobacco products, it is advised not to use this medication. Smoking can significantly increase the likelihood of serious health issues such as stroke, heart attack, blood clots, and high blood pressure, especially when using hormonal birth control methods like pills, patches, or rings. The risks escalate with age and the amount of tobacco consumed. It is strongly recommended to avoid smoking or using tobacco products while on this medication.

  • Iron Product Safety: Be aware that accidental ingestion of iron-containing products is a primary cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6 years. Ensure these products are stored securely out of the reach of young children to prevent accidental ingestion.

  • In Case of Overdose: If an overdose occurs, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. Contact a healthcare professional or a poison control center without delay.

By adhering to these guidelines and taking necessary precautions, the safety and effectiveness of the medication can be maximized.

Layolis Fe Side Effects

While using this medication, you may experience some mild side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, bloating, breast tenderness, swelling of the ankles or feet due to fluid retention, or changes in weight. Occasionally, you might notice vaginal bleeding between periods or missed/irregular periods, particularly in the initial months. These side effects are usually not a cause for concern, but consult a healthcare professional if they persist or worsen.

Monitoring your blood pressure is important, as the medication may cause it to rise. Report any consistently high readings to a healthcare provider. Although serious side effects are uncommon, immediately inform a healthcare professional if you experience lumps in the breast, unexpected mood changes, severe stomach or abdominal pain, unusual changes in vaginal bleeding, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Rare but severe complications such as blood clots, which can lead to heart attack or stroke, require immediate medical attention. Symptoms to watch for include chest pain, confusion, dizziness, swelling in the legs, difficulty speaking, sudden headaches, or changes in vision. Additionally, although extremely rare, allergic reactions may occur. Seek urgent medical care if you have symptoms like rash, severe dizziness, swelling, or breathing difficulties.

These are not all the possible side effects. If you notice other unusual effects, consult a healthcare provider for guidance.

Interactions

Some medications that might interact with this drug include aromatase inhibitors like anastrozole and exemestane, as well as fezolinetant, ospemifene, tamoxifen, tizanidine, and tranexamic acid. Additionally, certain treatments for chronic hepatitis C, such as ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir with or without dasabuvir, may also interact. Certain drugs can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control by decreasing hormone levels in the body, which could lead to pregnancy. These include griseofulvin, modafinil, rifamycins like rifampin and rifabutin, ritonavir, St. John's wort, and medications used for seizures such as barbiturates, carbamazepine, felbamate, phenytoin, primidone, and topiramate, as well as some HIV drugs like nelfinavir and nevirapine. When starting any new medication, inform your doctor and discuss whether you should use reliable backup birth control. Also, report any new spotting or breakthrough bleeding to your doctor, as these might indicate that your birth control is not fully effective. This medication may also interfere with certain laboratory tests, like those for blood clotting factors or thyroid function, potentially causing incorrect results. Ensure that lab personnel and all your healthcare providers are aware that you are using this medication.
