This combination hormone medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: norethindrone (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). This product also contains a small amount of iron (ferrous fumarate) in inactive tablets taken during the fourth week. The inactive pills do not contain any hormones. These tablets are meant to keep you in the habit of taking 1 tablet each day and do not have enough iron to treat iron deficiency. Besides preventing pregnancy, birth control pills may make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, decrease the risk of ovarian cysts, and also treat acne. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).

Warnings

Do not use this medication if you smoke cigarettes/use tobacco and are over 35 years old. Smoking raises your risk of stroke, heart attack, blood clots, and high blood pressure from hormonal birth control (such as the pill, patch, ring). The risk of these serious problems increases with age and with the number of cigarettes you smoke. Do not smoke or use tobacco. Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6 years of age. Keep this product out of reach of children. If overdose occurs, get medical help right away or call a poison control center.

Nausea, vomiting, headache, abdominal cramps/bloating, breast tenderness, swelling of the ankles/feet (retaining fluid), or weight change may occur. Vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting) or missed/irregular periods may occur, especially during the first few months of use. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. If you miss 2 periods in a row (or 1 period if the pill has not been used properly), contact your doctor for a pregnancy test. Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. This medication may raise your blood pressure. Check your blood pressure regularly and tell your doctor if the results are high. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: a lump in your breast, mental/mood changes (such as new/worsening depression), unusual changes in vaginal bleeding (such as continuous spotting, sudden heavy bleeding), dark urine, severe stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin. This medication may rarely cause serious (sometimes fatal) problems from blood clots (such as heart attack, stroke, blood clots in the lungs or legs). Get medical help right away if you have: shortness of breath/rapid breathing, chest/jaw/left arm pain, unusual sweating, confusion, sudden dizziness/fainting, pain/swelling/warmth in the groin/calf, sudden/severe headaches, trouble speaking, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. In the US - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or at www.fda.gov/medwatch. Interactions

Some products that may interact with this drug include: aromatase inhibitors (such as anastrozole, exemestane, letrozole), dimercaprol, fezolinetant, ospemifene, tamoxifen, tranexamic acid, certain combination products used to treat chronic hepatitis C (ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir with or without dasabuvir). Some drugs may cause hormonal birth control to work less well by decreasing the amount of birth control hormones in your body. This effect can result in pregnancy. Examples include griseofulvin, modafinil, rifamycins (such as rifampin), ritonavir, St. John's wort, drugs used to treat seizures (such as barbiturates, carbamazepine, felbamate, phenytoin, primidone, topiramate), HIV drugs (such as nelfinavir, nevirapine), among others. Tell your doctor when you start any new drug, and discuss if you should use reliable backup birth control. Also tell your doctor if you have any new spotting or breakthrough bleeding, because these may be signs that your birth control is not working well. This medication may interfere with certain lab tests (such as blood tests for clotting factors, thyroid), possibly causing false test results. Make sure lab personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.
Lo Loestrin Fe FAQs
What does lo Loestrin fe do to your body?

Lo Loestrin Fe is a combination oral contraceptive that contains estrogen and progestin. It primarily works by preventing ovulation, which means it stops the ovaries from releasing an egg. Additionally, it thickens the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, and alters the uterine lining, reducing the likelihood of implantation. These actions together help prevent pregnancy.

Lo Loestrin Fe, like other hormonal contraceptives, may cause weight changes in some individuals. However, weight gain is not a common side effect for everyone. Each person's reaction to the medication can vary, and lifestyle factors also play a role. If there are concerns about weight changes while taking Lo Loestrin Fe, it is advisable to discuss them with a healthcare provider.

Loestrin, a combination oral contraceptive pill, can sometimes lead to lighter periods or cause periods to stop altogether in some individuals. This effect is due to the hormonal changes it induces in the body. However, experiences can vary, and not everyone will have the same response. If there are concerns about changes in menstrual cycles while taking Loestrin, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider.

Lo Loestrin is a low-dose oral contraceptive that offers several benefits. It is primarily used for preventing pregnancy. Additionally, due to its low hormone levels, it may result in fewer side effects compared to higher-dose contraceptives. Some users may experience lighter and more regular menstrual periods, reduced menstrual cramps, and improvement in acne. However, individual experiences may vary, and it is important to consult a healthcare provider to determine if it is the right choice.

When starting Loestrin, one might experience some common side effects such as nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, or changes in menstrual flow. It is also possible to have spotting or breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first few months. These side effects often improve as the body adjusts to the medication. If any severe side effects occur, such as severe abdominal pain, chest pain, or vision changes, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. It is advisable to follow the healthcare provider's instructions and discuss any concerns with them.

Yes, Lo Loestrin Fe can cause emotional side effects in some individuals. These may include mood swings, depression, or anxiety. It is important for individuals to monitor their emotional well-being while taking this medication and consult with a healthcare provider if they experience significant changes in mood or emotional state.

Weight gain can vary from person to person when using birth control, and not everyone will experience it. However, some studies and anecdotal reports suggest that the Depo-Provera injection (medroxyprogesterone acetate) may be associated with more weight gain compared to other forms of birth control. It's important for individuals to discuss their concerns and options with a healthcare provider to find the most suitable method for their needs.

Yes, Loestrin, like other combination oral contraceptives, can cause water retention in some individuals. This is due to the hormonal changes it induces, which can lead to fluid retention as a side effect. If this becomes bothersome, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for further guidance.

Yes, it is possible to still get a period while taking Lo Loestrin Fe, although some individuals may experience lighter periods or even no periods at all. This variation is due to the hormonal changes caused by the birth control. If there are concerns about changes in menstrual cycles, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider.
