Doxylamine is an antihistamine, used to relieve symptoms of allergy, hay fever, and the common cold. This medication works by blocking certain natural substances (histamine, acetylcholine) that your body makes. This effect helps to relieve allergy/cold symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. Doxylamine is also used to help you relax and fall asleep. Cough-and-cold products have not been shown to be safe or effective in children younger than 6 years. Do not use this product to treat cold symptoms in children younger than 6 years unless specifically directed by the doctor. Also, do not give the 25 milligram tablets to children younger than 12 years, unless directed by the doctor. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details about using your product safely. These products do not cure or shorten the length of the common cold and may cause serious side effects. To decrease the risk for serious side effects, carefully follow all dosage directions. Do not use this product to make a child sleepy. Do not give other cough-and-cold medication that might contain the same or similar ingredients (see also Drug Interactions section). Ask the doctor or pharmacist about other ways to relieve cough and cold symptoms (such as drinking enough fluids, using a humidifier or saline nose drops/spray).

Wal-som Side Effects

When taking this medication, you may experience some mild side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, headache, constipation, an upset stomach, blurred vision, decreased coordination, or dryness in the mouth, nose, or throat. These are usually not serious and may improve as your body adjusts. To help manage dizziness or lightheadedness, try standing up gradually from sitting or lying positions.

While many people do not experience severe side effects, it's important to be aware of them. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any mental or mood changes such as hallucinations, irritability, nervousness, or confusion, as well as ringing in the ears, difficulty urinating, unusual bruising or bleeding, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.

In rare cases, very serious side effects like seizures may occur, requiring prompt medical attention. Additionally, though uncommon, allergic reactions can happen. Seek emergency care if you experience symptoms like a rash, itching, swelling (particularly of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

This overview does not cover all possible side effects. If you experience any unexpected changes or reactions, reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.

Certain products can interact with this medication. For instance, antihistamines used on the skin, such as diphenhydramine cream, ointment, or spray, may pose a risk. Be sure to check the labels of all your medications, including allergy or cough-and-cold products, since they may have ingredients that cause drowsiness. Consult your pharmacist about safely using these products. Additionally, this medication might affect certain lab tests, such as urine drug screens, potentially leading to incorrect results. Ensure that lab personnel and all your healthcare providers are aware of your use of this medication.
