Rivaroxaban is prescribed to prevent the formation of blood clots in individuals with a specific type of irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation or following hip or knee replacement surgery. It is also used to prevent clots in patients with limited mobility during and after their hospital stay. Additionally, rivaroxaban treats existing blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE), and helps prevent them from recurring. For children, it may be used after specific heart surgeries, like the Fontan procedure, to prevent clot formation. Rivaroxaban functions as an anticoagulant by inhibiting certain blood clotting proteins.

Warnings

Please continue taking rivaroxaban as prescribed and do not discontinue use without consulting your doctor. Stopping this medication prematurely can increase your risk of developing a serious blood clot, such as a stroke or a clot in the legs or lungs. Your doctor might recommend an alternative anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication to help minimize this risk. Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience symptoms like weakness on one side of your body, difficulty speaking, sudden changes in vision, confusion, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or pain, warmth, or swelling in your legs.

It is important to note that individuals using this medication might experience bleeding near the spinal cord following certain spinal procedures. This bleeding can lead to long-term or permanent paralysis. Discuss the potential benefits and risks with your doctor prior to any spinal procedure. The likelihood of bleeding is heightened if you have a spinal deformity, have undergone previous spinal procedures or surgeries (such as epidural catheter placement or complex epidural/spinal punctures), or are taking medications that increase bleeding risks, such as antiplatelet drugs like clopidogrel, anticoagulants like warfarin or enoxaparin, or NSAIDs like ibuprofen. Inform your doctor immediately if you notice symptoms such as back pain, leg numbness, tingling or weakness, or a loss of control over bowel or bladder functions (incontinence).

Xarelto Starter Pack Side Effects

Some individuals may experience easy bruising or minor bleeding, such as nosebleeds or bleeding from cuts, while taking this medication. These symptoms are generally mild, but if they persist or worsen, it's important to consult your healthcare provider.

Serious bleeding is a potential risk if the medication significantly affects your blood clotting proteins. Immediate medical attention is necessary if you experience frequent or persistent nosebleeds, unusual tiredness, pain, swelling, discomfort, or bruising. Additionally, watch for prolonged bleeding from cuts or gums, unusually heavy or prolonged menstrual flow, pink or dark urine, coughing up blood, vomit resembling coffee grounds, severe headaches, dizziness, fainting, bloody or black stools, or difficulty swallowing.

In rare cases, very serious bleeding can occur, and you should seek emergency medical help if you experience vision changes, confusion, trouble speaking, or weakness on one side of the body. Although a severe allergic reaction to this drug is uncommon, immediate medical attention is needed if you notice symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

This summary does not cover all possible side effects. If you observe any unusual effects not mentioned here, please contact your healthcare provider for further advice.

Interactions

Certain medications and products can interact with this drug. These include Mifepristone and other medications that increase the risk of bleeding or bruising, such as antiplatelet drugs like Clopidogrel, NSAIDs including Ibuprofen and Naproxen, and blood thinners like Warfarin and Enoxaparin. Some antidepressants, such as SSRIs like Fluoxetine and SNRIs such as desvenlafaxine and Venlafaxine, may also interact.

Additionally, some drugs can interfere with how your body removes rivaroxaban, which can affect its effectiveness. These include cobicistat, dronedarone, Ritonavir, certain antifungals like Itraconazole, Ketoconazole, and Posaconazole, HIV protease inhibitors such as lopinavir, rifamycins like Rifampin, St. John's wort, and seizure medications like Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, and Phenobarbital.

Using Aspirin with this medication can raise the risk of bleeding. However, if your healthcare provider has advised you to use low-dose aspirin (typically 81-162 mg daily) for heart attack or stroke prevention, you should continue unless instructed otherwise by your doctor. For further guidance, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
