Drug Details

Betahistine is a medication commonly prescribed to alleviate symptoms associated with Ménière's disease, such as vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and hearing loss. It is believed to work by improving blood flow in the inner ear, which may help reduce the frequency and severity of vertigo episodes. Typically, betahistine is taken orally three times a day, with doses spaced 6 to 8 hours apart. Patients may begin to notice improvements within a few weeks of starting treatment. Common side effects include headache, nausea, and indigestion, which are usually mild and transient. It's advisable to take betahistine with or after meals to minimize stomach discomfort. While betahistine is widely used in many countries, it is not approved for marketing in the United States. Individuals with asthma or a history of peptic ulcers should use betahistine cautiously and under medical supervision.
