Guanfacine Warnings
This medication comes with important safety warnings to ensure proper use and avoid potential risks. Carefully review the following information and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
Extreme Sleepiness and Dizziness: Guanfacine may induce significant sleepiness and dizziness, particularly at higher doses. This can impair your cognitive functions, reaction time, and concentration. The risk increases if you are concurrently using other medications that cause drowsiness, such as benzodiazepines, anxiety medications, muscle relaxants, and sleep aids. Assess how guanfacine affects you before engaging in activities that require focus, such as driving. If you experience excessive drowsiness, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Increased risk factors include high doses of guanfacine, age 65 or older, alcohol consumption, and the use of other sedative medications.
Nervousness and Anxiety from Sudden Discontinuation: Abruptly stopping guanfacine can result in nervousness and anxiety, and in rare cases, elevated blood pressure. It is crucial not to discontinue the medication without consulting your healthcare provider. They can guide you through a gradual dose reduction to mitigate these effects safely.
No specific contraindications are noted for guanfacine at this time.
