Hydrocortisone is a medication used to manage various conditions, including arthritis, severe allergies, blood disorders, breathing issues, certain cancers, eye diseases, intestinal disorders, and skin conditions. It functions by dampening the immune system's response, helping to alleviate symptoms like swelling and allergic reactions. Additionally, hydrocortisone may be prescribed alongside other medications to substitute certain hormones for individuals with reduced adrenal gland function or Addison's disease. As a corticosteroid, hydrocortisone is administered via injection when oral administration isn't an option or when immediate treatment is crucial for severe medical conditions. It's important to discuss with your doctor the potential risks and benefits of hydrocortisone, particularly if the injection is near the spine (epidural), as rare but serious side effects can occur in such cases.
