Pandel Warnings
This medication comes with several important safety warnings and potential risks. It is crucial to review these carefully and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider. Below are the key safety considerations:
Hormonal Issues and Withdrawal: Prolonged use of topical hydrocortisone over large skin areas may lead to adrenal suppression, where the body reduces its natural steroid production. Abrupt cessation of the medication can cause withdrawal symptoms like skin swelling, rash, and burning. To avoid this, your healthcare provider will aim to prescribe the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. If long-term use is necessary, periodic lab tests may be required to monitor adrenal function. Do not discontinue use suddenly without consulting your provider. Be cautious if: using for extended periods, using more than recommended, covering the application area with a bandage, or if the patient is a young child.
Elevated Blood Sugar Levels: Long-term or extensive use of topical hydrocortisone can increase blood sugar levels, potentially leading to diabetes. If you have diabetes, regular blood sugar monitoring may be advised to ensure safety. Report any increase in thirst or urination to your provider. Risk factors include prolonged use and excessive application.
Infection Risks: There is an increased risk of developing or exacerbating skin or oral infections, such as fungal or bacterial infections, with long-term use of topical hydrocortisone. Avoid use if you have a skin infection, as it can worsen the condition. Contact your provider if symptoms like redness, swelling, pain, pus, or lack of improvement after 7 days occur, as these may indicate a new infection. The risk is higher with use beyond 7 days.
Skin Reactions: Extended use beyond the prescribed period can cause adverse skin reactions, including thinning, stretch marks, spider veins, burning, itching, irritation, dryness, inflamed hair follicles, changes in skin color, or rash. Your provider will prescribe the minimal effective dose for the shortest possible time to mitigate these risks. Report any new or worsening skin issues promptly. Risks are associated with excessive and inappropriate use.
There are currently no known contraindications for this medication. Always adhere to your healthcare provider's instructions and report any concerns or side effects experienced during treatment.
Pandel Side Effects
When using this medication, some common side effects may include mild burning, itching, or irritation at the application site. You might also experience dry skin or inflamed hair follicles. These side effects are generally not severe and often resolve on their own. However, if they persist or worsen, it's advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further advice.
In addition to the common side effects, some patients might notice acne-like bumps, changes in skin color, or a rash. Other possible effects include thinning of the skin, stretch marks, and increased hair growth. These side effects are usually not serious but should be monitored, especially if they become bothersome.
On rare occasions, the medication can be absorbed into the bloodstream, leading to more significant side effects such as unusual tiredness, weight loss, headaches, swelling of the ankles or feet, increased thirst or urination, and vision problems. These symptoms are particularly important to watch for in children or those using the treatment over large areas of skin for a prolonged period.
A very serious allergic reaction is rare but requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms include rash, severe dizziness, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing. If you notice any side effects not listed here or if any of the mentioned effects are severe, seek medical advice promptly.
