hydrocortisone

Hydrocortisone is a man-made version of a natural substance (cortisol) made by the adrenal gland. It is used to treat conditions such as arthritis, blood/hormone/immune system disorders, skin and eye conditions, breathing problems, cancer, and severe allergies. It decreases your immune system's response to various diseases to reduce symptoms such as pain, swelling and allergic-type reactions. Hydrocortisone is also used to treat low cortisol levels caused by diseases of the adrenal gland (such as Addison's disease, adrenocortical insufficiency). Corticosteroids are needed in many ways for the body to function well. They are important for salt and water balance and keeping blood pressure normal.

Cortef Side Effects

You might experience mild side effects such as nausea, heartburn, headaches, trouble sleeping, increased sweating, or acne. These effects are generally manageable, but if they persist or worsen, it’s important to inform your healthcare provider.

This medication can suppress your immune system, potentially increasing your risk of infections. Be vigilant for any signs of infection like cough, sore throat, fever, or chills, and seek medical advice if they occur. Long-term use may lead to oral thrush or yeast infections, indicated by white patches in your mouth or changes in vaginal discharge.

In rare cases, this drug may elevate blood sugar levels, possibly affecting diabetes. Watch for symptoms like increased thirst and urination, and regularly monitor your blood sugar if you have diabetes. Adjustments to your diabetes management may be required.

Serious side effects warrant immediate medical attention. These include unusual tiredness, swelling in the ankles or feet, rapid weight gain, vision changes, easy bruising or bleeding, facial puffiness, abnormal hair growth, mental or mood changes, muscle weakness, thinning skin, slow healing of wounds, menstrual changes, bone pain, seizures, gastrointestinal bleeding, or red/purple skin spots.

Although rare, severe allergic reactions can occur. Seek urgent medical help if you experience a rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. Always report any unexpected side effects to your healthcare provider.

Interactions

Some medications that may interact with this drug include aldesleukin, desmopressin, mifepristone, and other medicines that increase bleeding or bruising risk, such as antiplatelet drugs like clopidogrel, NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen, and anticoagulants like warfarin or dabigatran. Using aspirin with this medication can heighten the risk of bleeding. Nevertheless, if your doctor has advised you to take low-dose aspirin (81-162 milligrams daily) for heart attack or stroke prevention, continue taking it unless your doctor advises otherwise. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further guidance. Additionally, this medication might interfere with certain laboratory tests, like skin tests, potentially leading to inaccurate results. Ensure that all laboratory staff and your healthcare providers are aware that you are taking this medication.
