Doxepin cream, also known by the brand name Zonalon, is a prescription medication used to alleviate itching associated with certain skin conditions in adults, such as eczema and lichen simplex chronicus. This cream should be applied to the affected areas up to four times daily for a maximum of eight days. While using this medication, you might experience mild side effects like burning or stinging at the application site. If applied over large areas, drowsiness may occur. Doxepin belongs to a class of medications known as tricyclic antidepressants, and although its exact mechanism in reducing itching is not fully understood, it is believed to work by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes itching during allergic reactions. By interfering with histamine, doxepin helps to relieve the discomfort caused by these skin conditions.
