Pseudoephedrine is used for the temporary relief of stuffy nose and sinus pain/pressure caused by infection (such as the common cold, flu) or other breathing illnesses (such as hay fever, allergies, bronchitis). Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant (sympathomimetic). It works by narrowing the blood vessels to decrease swelling and congestion. If you are self-treating with this medication, it is important to read the manufacturer's package instructions carefully so you know when to consult your doctor or pharmacist. (See also Precautions section.) Cough-and-cold products have not been shown to be safe or effective in children younger than 6 years. Do not use this product in children younger than 6 years unless specifically directed by the doctor. Long-acting tablets/capsules are not recommended for use in children younger than 12 years. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details about using your product safely. These products do not cure or shorten the length of the common cold and may cause serious side effects. To decrease the risk for serious side effects, carefully follow all dosage directions. Do not use this product to make a child sleepy. Do not give other cough-and-cold medication that might contain the same or similar decongestants (see also Drug Interactions section). Ask the doctor or pharmacist about other ways to relieve cough and cold symptoms (such as drinking enough fluids, using a humidifier or saline nose drops/spray).

Pseudoephedrine Hcl FAQs
Which is stronger, pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine HCl?

Pseudoephedrine is generally considered to be more effective as a decongestant compared to phenylephrine HCl. Pseudoephedrine has better oral bioavailability and is often preferred for relieving nasal congestion. However, individual responses may vary, and some people may find phenylephrine effective for their symptoms.

Yes, pseudoephedrine HCl is the active ingredient in the original formulation of Sudafed, which is a decongestant used to relieve nasal congestion.

Pseudoephedrine and pseudoephedrine HCl refer to the same active ingredient, but pseudoephedrine HCl is the hydrochloride salt form of pseudoephedrine. This form is commonly used in medications to enhance the stability and absorption of the drug in the body. The therapeutic effects and uses are the same for both.

Pseudoephedrine HCl is a decongestant that typically does not cause drowsiness. In fact, it may cause insomnia or restlessness in some individuals. If drowsiness occurs, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, as it may be an unusual side effect.

There are two types of Sudafed because they contain different active ingredients. One type contains pseudoephedrine, which is a decongestant that can relieve nasal congestion by shrinking blood vessels in the nasal passages. The other type contains phenylephrine, which is also a decongestant but is used as an alternative to pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is more tightly regulated due to its potential use in the illicit production of methamphetamine, which is why phenylephrine is available over-the-counter without such restrictions.
