hyoscyamine sulfate

Hyoscyamine is used to treat a variety of stomach/intestinal problems such as cramps, infant colic, and irritable bowel syndrome. It is also used to treat other conditions such as bladder and bowel control problems, cramping pain caused by kidney stones and gallstones, and Parkinson's disease. In addition, it is used to decrease side effects of certain medications (drugs used to treat myasthenia gravis) and insecticides. This medication works by decreasing acid production in the stomach, slowing down the natural movements of the gut, and relaxing muscles in many organs (such as the stomach, intestines, bladder, kidney, gallbladder). Hyoscyamine also lessens the amount of certain body fluids (such as saliva, sweat). This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics/antispasmodics.

Hyosyne Side Effects

When taking this medication, you might experience mild side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, headache, trouble sleeping, constipation, flushing, dry skin, and decreased sweating. These are common and usually not a cause for concern. To ease dry mouth, try sucking on sugarless hard candy or ice chips, chewing sugarless gum, drinking water, or using a saliva substitute.

However, some serious side effects may occur and require immediate attention. These include mental or mood changes like confusion or unusual excitement, fast or irregular heartbeat, difficulty urinating, decreased sexual ability, loss of coordination, trouble speaking, and vomiting.

In rare cases, very serious side effects such as eye pain, swelling, or redness, vision changes like seeing rainbows around lights at night, or a severe allergic reaction may occur. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. If you experience these, seek medical help immediately.

While this is not an exhaustive list of side effects, if you notice any other unusual symptoms, it’s important to contact your healthcare provider for guidance.

Be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you use certain antifungal medications like ketoconazole or itraconazole, bisphosphonates such as alendronate or risedronate, corticosteroids like prednisone, slow-release digoxin, potassium supplements, or pramlintide. Additionally, if you are taking any products that might cause drowsiness, such as opioid pain relievers (for example, codeine or hydrocodone), alcohol, cannabis, sleep or anxiety medications (such as alprazolam, lorazepam, or zolpidem), muscle relaxants like carisoprodol or cyclobenzaprine, or antihistamines such as cetirizine or diphenhydramine, you should let your healthcare provider know.

It's important to check all your medication labels, including those for allergy or cough-and-cold products, as they might contain ingredients that cause drowsiness. Consult your pharmacist for advice on safe use. Additionally, this medication might affect the results of certain lab tests, potentially leading to inaccurate results, so ensure that all your doctors and lab personnel are aware that you are taking this drug.
