Ultrasal-er Warnings
The following safety warnings provide crucial information regarding the use of this medication. Please read them thoroughly and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
Infection Risk for Individuals with Diabetes or Poor Circulation: Salicylic acid can cause the skin to become dry and potentially crack, leading to an increased risk of infection. This is particularly concerning for individuals with diabetes or conditions that impair blood circulation, as they may not notice cuts and may experience prolonged healing times. If you have diabetes or circulatory issues, discuss the use of salicylic acid with your healthcare provider to ensure it is safe for you.
Reye's Syndrome in Children and Teenagers: There is a risk of developing Reye's syndrome, a serious condition affecting the liver and brain, when salicylic acid is used in children or teenagers, especially those with viral infections. Seek immediate medical attention if your child shows symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, low energy, confusion, loss of consciousness, or seizures.
Salicylate Toxicity: Only apply salicylic acid to the affected areas of the skin. Using it on larger areas can result in excessive absorption, leading to salicylate toxicity, a potentially life-threatening condition. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, hearing loss, tinnitus, fatigue, rapid breathing, diarrhea, and mental health changes. Inform your healthcare provider if any such symptoms occur.
Additionally, this medication is contraindicated in the following scenarios:
- Children Under 2 Years of Age: Do not use this medication on children younger than two years old. Consult your healthcare provider for alternatives if necessary.
Refer to these guidelines to ensure safe and effective use of the medication, and always consult with a healthcare professional when in doubt.
Ultrasal-er Side Effects
When using this medication, some individuals may experience common side effects such as dry skin, peeling, skin irritation, stinging, burning, and itching. These effects are usually mild and often resolve on their own. However, if they persist or become bothersome, it's advisable to consult a healthcare provider for guidance.
In rare instances, more serious side effects can occur. These include spreading skin redness around the treated area, signs of infection such as pus or bloody discharge, and the formation of a deep sore or ulcer at the treatment site. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is essential to contact your healthcare provider promptly for advice and potential treatment.
Very rarely, a severe allergic reaction may occur, characterized by symptoms such as rash, itching or swelling, particularly of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. This requires immediate medical attention. Additionally, symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, unusual fatigue, loss of consciousness, or seizures may indicate a condition known as Reye's syndrome, which also necessitates urgent medical care. If you experience any other effects not listed, it is important to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
