If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away.

Captopril Side Effects

Dizziness, lightheadedness, or loss of taste may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Dry cough may also occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: fainting, fast heartbeat, symptoms of a high potassium blood level (such as muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat), signs of infection (such as sore throat that doesn't go away, fever, chills), cloudy urine. Although captopril may be used to prevent kidney problems or treat people who have kidney problems, it may also rarely cause serious kidney problems or make them worse. Your doctor will check your kidney function while you are taking captopril. Tell your doctor right away if you have any signs of kidney problems such as a change in the amount of urine. This drug may rarely cause serious (possibly fatal) liver problems. Get medical help right away if you have any symptoms of liver damage, including: nausea/vomiting that doesn't stop, loss of appetite, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. In the US - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or at www.fda.gov/medwatch. In Canada - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to Health Canada at 1-866-234-2345.

Captopril Interactions

Some products that may interact with this drug include: aliskiren, certain drugs that weaken the immune system/increase the risk of infection (such as everolimus, sirolimus), lithium, drugs that may increase the level of potassium in the blood (such as ARBs including losartan/valsartan, birth control pills containing drospirenone), sacubitril. Some products have ingredients that could raise your blood pressure or worsen your heart failure. Tell your pharmacist what products you are using, and ask how to use them safely (especially cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen). A very serious reaction may occur if you are getting injections for bee/wasp sting allergy (desensitization) and are also taking captopril. Make sure all your doctors know which medicines you are using. This medication may interfere with certain lab tests (such as acetone urine test), possibly causing false test results. Make sure lab personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.
Captopril FAQs
What is the drug captopril used for?

Captopril is used primarily to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. It is also used to improve survival after a heart attack and to treat kidney problems caused by diabetes.

The most common side effect of captopril is a persistent dry cough.

A suitable substitute for lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor, could be another medication from the same class, such as enalapril or ramipril. Alternatively, if an ACE inhibitor is not well-tolerated, a healthcare provider might consider prescribing an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) like losartan or valsartan. It is important for the patient to consult with their healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate alternative based on their specific medical condition and history.

When taking captopril, it is important to avoid the following:1. Potassium Supplements and Salt Substitutes: These can increase potassium levels in the blood, which may lead to hyperkalemia.2. Alcohol: It can further lower blood pressure and increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness or fainting.3. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): These can reduce the effectiveness of captopril and may increase the risk of kidney damage.4. Dehydration: Ensure adequate fluid intake to prevent low blood pressure and kidney issues.5. High-Sodium Foods: These can counteract the blood pressure-lowering effects of captopril.Patients should always consult with their healthcare provider for personalized advice and before making any changes to their diet or medication regimen.

Captopril is not a beta blocker. It is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used primarily to treat high blood pressure and heart failure.
