carbidopa-levodopa

This combination medication is used to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease or Parkinson-like symptoms (such as shakiness, stiffness, difficulty moving). Parkinson's disease is thought to be caused by too little of a naturally occurring substance (dopamine) in the brain. Levodopa changes into dopamine in the brain, helping to control movement. Carbidopa prevents the breakdown of levodopa in the bloodstream so more levodopa can enter the brain. Carbidopa can also reduce some of levodopa's side effects such as nausea and vomiting.

Dhivy Side Effects

When taking this medication, you might experience mild side effects like dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, unusual dreams, or headaches. These are generally manageable, but if they persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional. Additionally, the medication might cause your saliva, urine, or sweat to turn a dark color, which is harmless but could stain clothing. To minimize dizziness or lightheadedness, rise slowly from sitting or lying positions.

More serious side effects include sudden sleep episodes during daily activities, potentially without prior drowsiness. This risk is heightened if consuming alcohol or other drowsiness-inducing substances. Avoid driving or engaging in potentially dangerous tasks if you become excessively sleepy during the day and discuss this with your healthcare provider.

Immediately report serious side effects like uncontrollable movements or spasms, excessive eye blinking, vision changes, severe abdominal pain, black or tarry stools, vomit resembling coffee grounds, mood changes, signs of infection, unusual bleeding or bruising, extreme fatigue, tingling of extremities, or unusual strong urges. These warrant prompt medical attention.

Seek urgent care for very serious side effects such as chest pain or fainting. Stopping or reducing the dose suddenly can cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), characterized by fever, severe muscle stiffness, confusion, sweating, and irregular heartbeat. An allergic reaction is rare but serious; symptoms include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or breathing trouble. Always reach out to a healthcare professional if you notice any other unusual effects.

Interactions

Combining this medication with MAO inhibitors can lead to a severe and potentially life-threatening interaction. Avoid using MAO inhibitors, such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, metaxalone, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, and tranylcypromine, while on this medication. Typically, these MAO inhibitors should not be taken for two weeks prior to starting treatment with this medication. However, some MAO inhibitors like rasagiline, safinamide, and selegiline might be allowed under strict medical supervision. Consult your doctor on when it is safe to begin or discontinue this medication. Additionally, this medication may affect certain laboratory tests, including those for urine catecholamine, glucose, and ketones, possibly leading to incorrect results. Inform all healthcare providers and laboratory staff that you are using this medication.
