Drug Details

Hyoscyamine is an anticholinergic medication designed to alleviate symptoms associated with various stomach and intestinal issues, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and stomach ulcers. It is also effective in managing conditions such as overactive bladder, pain caused by kidney stones and gallstones, and certain symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as muscle rigidity and tremors. Additionally, it helps reduce adverse effects from specific medications and insecticides. The drug works by blocking acetylcholine, a chemical that influences muscle contraction and fluid secretion, thereby reducing stomach acid production, slowing gut movement, and relaxing muscles in organs like the stomach, bladder, and gallbladder. Hyoscyamine is available in several forms, including immediate-release tablets and oral solutions, and is typically administered every four hours. Common side effects may include dry mouth, drowsiness, and dizziness.
