Elepsia Xr Warnings
The following safety information outlines the important risks and precautions associated with the use of Levetiracetam (Keppra). It is crucial to carefully review these details and consult your healthcare provider with any questions or concerns.
Mood and Behavior Changes: Levetiracetam can cause alterations in mood and behavior, leading to increased irritability, aggression, anxiety, paranoia, depression, or withdrawal. It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you or your child experience any such changes, especially if there is a history of mental health issues such as depression, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder.
Suicide Risk: This medication may elevate the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, which may manifest as soon as one week after starting the treatment. Immediate medical attention is advised if you or someone around you notices signs such as anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disturbances, anger, irritability, or restlessness, particularly if you are also taking other anti-seizure medications.
Cognitive and Motor Impairment: Levetiracetam can affect brain function, leading to difficulties with concentration, speech, and coordination, as well as dizziness and sleepiness. These side effects may be more pronounced if you are taking high doses, immediate-release forms, or other medications that induce drowsiness or dizziness (e.g., benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants, sleep aids).
Severe Allergic Reactions: There is a risk of serious allergic reactions, including life-threatening conditions like facial swelling or anaphylaxis, as well as severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).
Withdrawal Seizures: Do not abruptly discontinue Levetiracetam without consulting your healthcare provider, as sudden cessation can lead to withdrawal-induced seizures. Your provider will guide you on how to taper the dose safely if discontinuation is necessary.
Low Blood Cell Counts: Although infrequent, Levetiracetam can cause reductions in blood cell counts, potentially increasing the risk of anemia, infections, and bleeding or bruising. Regular blood tests may be required to monitor your blood cell levels. Notify your provider if you experience symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath, chills, weakness, unusual bruising, or bleeding.
Increased Blood Pressure in Young Children: In children under four years of age, Levetiracetam may cause elevated blood pressure. Regular monitoring of your child’s blood pressure by a healthcare provider, and possibly at home, is suggested. Report any unusual increases in blood pressure to your child’s provider.
Seizures During Pregnancy: The effectiveness of Levetiracetam may decrease during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester, due to lower medication levels. Pregnant individuals should have more frequent follow-ups with their healthcare provider to ensure effective seizure control and may require dose adjustments.
For any concerns or additional information, please discuss with your healthcare provider.
Elepsia Xr Side Effects
When taking this medication, you may experience some common side effects, especially in the initial weeks. These are generally mild and often diminish as your body gets accustomed to the drug. Adults may notice symptoms such as weakness, sleepiness, headache, infection, and dizziness. Children might encounter headaches, common cold symptoms, vomiting, sleepiness, tiredness, aggression, stuffy nose, lowered appetite, and irritability. If these effects persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.
While most people using this medication do not experience serious side effects, it's important to be aware of them. Serious side effects may include loss of coordination, mental or mood changes such as irritability or anxiety, and signs of anemia like persistent unusual tiredness and pale skin. If you notice easy bruising or bleeding, or any signs of depression or suicidal thoughts, seek medical attention immediately.
Levetiracetam can sometimes cause a rash, which is usually harmless, but it's crucial to notify your doctor if a rash appears, as it could indicate a more serious reaction. Although very rare, a severe allergic reaction is possible. Be alert for symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, itching or swelling (particularly of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing, and get medical help right away if they occur.
This guide does not cover all possible side effects. If you experience any effects not listed here, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
