Imiquimod Warnings
This medication comes with important safety warnings that you should be aware of before starting treatment. Your healthcare provider is the best source of advice if you have any concerns. Please review the following points carefully:
Skin Reactions: Imiquimod can cause severe skin irritation. If you notice blisters, weeping, severe peeling, or difficulty urinating due to genital swelling, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Ensure any surgical sites or areas previously treated with other medications are fully healed before using imiquimod.
Flu-like Symptoms: Symptoms such as fever, nausea, aches, chills, or swollen lymph nodes may occur. Inform your healthcare provider immediately if these symptoms develop, as you may need to discontinue use temporarily.
Sun Sensitivity: Imiquimod increases skin sensitivity to sunlight, sunlamps, and UV light. Avoid sun exposure and tanning. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing if necessary. If you have a sunburn, wait for it to heal before applying imiquimod to that area. Discuss with your provider if your daily activities involve prolonged sun exposure or if you are prone to sunburn.
Actinic Keratosis Precaution (Aldara only): The use of imiquimod on the same area of actinic keratosis for more than one treatment cycle is not well-studied. Consult your provider if the condition persists or recurs after treatment. Avoid using this medication on large areas without your provider's guidance.
Specific Use for Skin Cancer (Aldara only): Imiquimod is intended for basal cell carcinoma on the skin's surface of the torso, neck, arms (excluding hands), or legs (excluding feet). It is not suitable for skin cancer on the face, head, anus, or genitals, or for more severe types. Regular follow-ups with your provider are necessary to monitor healing.
Ineffectiveness for HPV (Aldara only): Imiquimod does not cure HPV, and new warts can still form and be contagious. Discuss any concerns regarding HPV with your provider.
Use with Other Imiquimod Products (Zyclara only): Consult your provider before using multiple imiquimod products to avoid increased and severe side effects.
Autoimmune Conditions (Zyclara only): Imiquimod can activate immune cells, potentially causing a flare-up in individuals with autoimmune diseases. Discuss your condition with your provider before starting treatment.
No contraindications are provided for this medication. Always discuss your medical history and current medications with your healthcare provider to ensure safe use.

Imiquimod Interactions
What is imiquimod cream used for?
Imiquimod cream is used to treat certain skin conditions, including actinic keratosis, superficial basal cell carcinoma, and external genital and perianal warts. It works by stimulating the immune system to help fight these conditions.
What does imiquimod cream do to your skin?
Imiquimod cream is used to treat certain skin conditions by stimulating the immune system. It works by encouraging the body to produce natural substances that help fight off abnormal skin growths, such as warts, actinic keratosis, and superficial basal cell carcinoma. When applied to the skin, it can cause local skin reactions, including redness, swelling, itching, burning, and sometimes scabbing or crusting as part of the healing process. These reactions are generally a sign that the medication is working.
Can imiquimod get rid of HPV?
Imiquimod is a topical medication that can be used to treat external genital warts caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). While it can help clear the warts, it does not eliminate the HPV infection itself. The virus may remain in the body, and warts can potentially recur. It is important to follow a healthcare provider's guidance for treatment and management of HPV-related conditions.
Is imiquimod cream a chemo cream?
Yes, imiquimod cream is sometimes referred to as a "chemo cream" because it is used to treat certain types of skin cancers and precancerous conditions by stimulating the immune system to attack abnormal cells.
What does imiquimod do to healthy skin?
Imiquimod is a topical medication that can cause irritation to healthy skin. It may lead to redness, swelling, itching, burning, or peeling in the area where it is applied. It is important to apply imiquimod only to the affected area and avoid contact with healthy skin to minimize these side effects. If irritation occurs, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for guidance.
