Iron Supplement FAQs
Which form of iron is best absorbed?

The best-absorbed form of iron is heme iron, which is found in animal-based foods such as meat, poultry, and fish. Non-heme iron, found in plant-based foods, is less readily absorbed by the body. To enhance the absorption of non-heme iron, it can be consumed with vitamin C-rich foods.

Taking iron supplements when they are not needed can lead to an excess of iron in the body, a condition known as iron overload or hemochromatosis. This can cause symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. Over time, excessive iron can damage organs like the liver, heart, and pancreas. It is important to only take iron supplements if they are recommended by a healthcare provider based on a confirmed deficiency.
