Isosorbide mononitrate is a medication designed to prevent chest pain, known as angina, in individuals with coronary artery disease. It belongs to a class of drugs called nitrates, which function by relaxing and widening blood vessels, thus enhancing blood flow to the heart. This medication is not intended to relieve chest pain once it starts, nor should it be taken immediately before physical activities such as exercise or sexual activity to prevent angina. For these situations, your doctor may suggest other medications. There are two forms of isosorbide mononitrate: the immediate-release (IR) version, which is typically taken twice daily about seven hours apart, and the extended-release (ER) version, which is taken once daily in the morning.
