Methylphenidate ER (xr) Interactions

Taking MAO inhibitors with this medication may cause a serious (possibly fatal) drug interaction. Avoid taking MAO inhibitors (isocarboxazid, linezolid, metaxalone, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, safinamide, selegiline, tranylcypromine) during treatment with this medication. Most MAO inhibitors should also not be taken for two weeks before treatment with this medication. Ask your doctor when to start or stop taking this medication. Avoid alcohol when using this medication because it may cause the medication to be released too quickly and increase the risk of side effects. Some brands of this drug may be affected by a change in the amount of acid in your stomach. If you are taking a product to decrease stomach acid (such as antacids, ranitidine, omeprazole), check with your pharmacist to see if your brand may be affected. Methylphenidate is very similar to dexmethylphenidate. Do not use medications containing dexmethylphenidate while using methylphenidate. This medication may interfere with certain medical/lab tests (such as brain scan for Parkinson's disease), possibly causing false test results. Make sure lab personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.
Methylphenidate ER (xr) FAQs
Is methylphenidate XR the same as Concerta?

Methylphenidate XR and Concerta are not exactly the same, but they are related. Concerta is a brand name for an extended-release formulation of methylphenidate. Methylphenidate XR refers to any extended-release form of methylphenidate, which can include Concerta as well as other brands or generic versions.

Methylphenidate ER and Adderall are not the same. Methylphenidate ER is an extended-release formulation of methylphenidate, while Adderall is a combination of amphetamine salts. Both are used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but they contain different active ingredients and may have different effects and side effects.

Methylphenidate extended-release is a formulation of the medication that is designed to release the drug over an extended period. Concerta is a brand name for one type of methylphenidate extended-release. While Concerta is a specific brand, there are other brands and generic versions of methylphenidate extended-release available.

The closest equivalent to Concerta is Ritalin LA or Metadate CD, as they all contain the active ingredient methylphenidate. These medications are used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and have similar effects, though they may differ in their release mechanisms and duration of action.

Methylphenidate is not commonly associated with causing fever. However, if a person experiences a fever while taking methylphenidate, it could be due to an unrelated infection or another underlying condition. If the fever persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
