Trileptal Side Effects
Taking oxcarbazepine might cause some mild side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, stomach or abdominal pain, headache, trouble sleeping, or constipation. These effects are generally manageable, but if they persist or worsen, it is important to consult your healthcare provider.
In rare cases, oxcarbazepine can lead to more serious side effects. Some individuals using anticonvulsants may experience depression, suicidal thoughts, or mood changes. It's crucial to seek immediate medical attention if you or your family notice sudden changes in mood or behavior, such as signs of depression or thoughts of self-harm.
Other serious side effects requiring prompt medical attention include loss of coordination, vision changes, rapid eye movements, tremors, unusual bleeding or bruising, and extreme tiredness. Additionally, very serious side effects, like signs of infection, severe nausea, confusion, or seizures, demand urgent care.
Oxcarbazepine can rarely cause severe skin reactions, particularly in certain ethnic groups, such as those of Asian or South Asian descent. Symptoms like skin rash, blisters, peeling, itching, or swelling require immediate medical help. Similarly, a severe allergic reaction, though rare, requires urgent assistance if symptoms like rash, facial swelling, severe dizziness, or breathing difficulties occur.
This summary includes key side effects, but if you observe any other issues not mentioned here, it's advisable to contact your healthcare provider for guidance.
Interactions
Certain medications can interact with this drug, including Orlistat. This drug can alter the rate at which other medications are removed from your body, potentially impacting their effectiveness. Some of these drugs include cabotegravir, cobicistat, elvitegravir, sofosbuvir, and rilpivirine. Additionally, this medication may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control methods like pills, patches, or rings, which could lead to pregnancy. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist to determine if you need to use an additional method of contraception. Notify your doctor if you experience new spotting or breakthrough bleeding, as these could indicate that your birth control is less effective.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using other substances that may cause drowsiness, such as alcohol, marijuana (cannabis), antihistamines (like Cetirizine and diphenhydramine), sleep or anxiety medications (such as Alprazolam, Diazepam, Zolpidem), muscle relaxants (like Carisoprodol and Cyclobenzaprine), or opioid pain relievers (such as codeine and hydrocodone). Carefully check the labels of all your medications, including those for allergies or cough and cold, since they might contain ingredients that can cause drowsiness. Consult your pharmacist about the safe use of these products.
It's important to note that Oxcarbazepine is very similar to eslicarbazepine, so avoid using medications that contain eslicarbazepine while taking oxcarbazepine.
