Aztreonam, marketed under the brand name Azactam, is an antibiotic designed to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis, bloodstream infections, skin infections like cellulitis, stomach infections, and infections of the uterine lining (endometritis). It belongs to the monobactam class of antibiotics and is particularly useful for patients who are allergic to penicillin. Aztreonam works by inhibiting the bacteria's ability to form a protective cell wall, ultimately causing the bacteria to die. This medication is usually administered via injection every 6 to 12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection. While side effects are uncommon, some patients may experience pain or swelling at the injection site.
