fluticasone-vilanterol

This medication is used to prevent and decrease symptoms (wheezing and trouble breathing) caused by asthma and ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema). This inhaler contains 2 medications: fluticasone and vilanterol. Fluticasone belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing the swelling of the airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. Vilanterol belongs to a class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and you can breathe more easily. When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (like vilanterol) may rarely increase the risk of serious (sometimes fatal) asthma-related breathing problems. However, combination inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonists, such as this product, do not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. For asthma treatment, this product should be used when breathing problems are not well controlled with one asthma-control medication (such as inhaled corticosteroid) or if your symptoms need combination treatment. Before using this medication, it is important to learn how to use it properly. This medication must be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. If an asthma attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.

Breo Ellipta FAQs
Is Breo Ellipta inhaler a steroid?

Yes, Breo Ellipta is an inhaler that contains a combination of two medications: fluticasone furoate, which is a corticosteroid, and vilanterol, which is a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA). The corticosteroid component helps to reduce inflammation in the airways.

Breo Ellipta and albuterol are not the same. Breo Ellipta is a combination inhaler containing fluticasone furoate and vilanterol, used for long-term management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Albuterol, on the other hand, is a short-acting bronchodilator used for quick relief of asthma symptoms and bronchospasm. They serve different purposes in respiratory treatment.

The generic for Advair is fluticasone propionate and salmeterol.

Yes, Breo (fluticasone furoate and vilanterol) is a medication that can help improve lung function. It is commonly prescribed for individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. By reducing inflammation and relaxing the muscles around the airways, Breo can help improve breathing and lung function over time. However, it is important for patients to use it as directed by their healthcare provider for optimal results.

There are several alternatives to albuterol inhalers that can be considered, depending on the specific needs and medical condition of the patient. Some common alternatives include levalbuterol (Xopenex), which is similar to albuterol but may have fewer side effects for some individuals. Other options might include long-acting bronchodilators like salmeterol or formoterol, often used in combination with inhaled corticosteroids for long-term management. It is important for the patient to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate alternative based on their specific health needs and medical history.
