Dextromethorphan-guaifenesin Side Effects
While taking this medication, some individuals might experience dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, or vomiting. These side effects are generally mild, but if they persist or worsen, it is important to inform a healthcare provider. Most patients taking this medication do not encounter serious side effects, which can be reassuring.
However, it's crucial to be aware of the potential for a rare but severe allergic reaction. If you experience symptoms such as a rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
This list does not include all possible side effects. If you experience any other unexpected effects, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional for guidance.
Interactions
Certain MAO inhibitors can lead to a severe and potentially life-threatening reaction when combined with this medication. Do not take drugs like isocarboxazid, Metaxalone, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, Rasagiline, safinamide, Selegiline, or Tranylcypromine while using this medication. Additionally, most MAO inhibitors should not be used for at least two weeks before starting this treatment. Consult your doctor about the appropriate timing for starting or stopping this medication. Another drug that may interact with this medication is rolapitant.
Guaifenesin and dextromethorphan are found in both prescription and over-the-counter products. It’s important to read the labels on all of your medications to avoid taking more than one product containing guaifenesin or dextromethorphan.
Guaifenesin may affect certain laboratory tests (like urine levels of specific acids), potentially leading to incorrect results. Ensure that all laboratory staff and your healthcare providers are aware that you are using this medication.
