Warnings
Metformin, in rare instances, can accumulate in the body, leading to a serious and potentially fatal condition known as lactic acidosis. The risk of developing lactic acidosis is higher in older adults, individuals with kidney or liver disease, those who are dehydrated, have heart failure, consume excessive alcohol, undergo surgery, or have X-ray or scanning procedures involving iodinated contrast agents, or if certain medications are also used. Your healthcare provider may advise temporarily discontinuing this medication in some cases. For further guidance, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
- If you experience symptoms indicative of lactic acidosis, such as unusual fatigue, dizziness, extreme drowsiness, chills, bluish or cold skin, muscle pain, rapid or difficult breathing, slow or irregular heartbeat, or stomach discomfort accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, stop taking this medication immediately and seek urgent medical attention.
Janumet Side Effects
When taking this medication, you might experience some common side effects like nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea, headache, weakness, and a metallic taste in your mouth. These are usually mild and should ease over time. However, if they persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider promptly.
Be alert for symptoms that could indicate more serious conditions. If stomach issues reappear after initial treatment, it may suggest lactic acidosis, a serious condition needing immediate attention. Additionally, signs of low blood sugar, such as sudden sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling in hands/feet, can occur, especially if combined with other diabetes medications. Carry glucose tablets or gel to manage low blood sugar quickly.
Watch for high blood sugar signs like increased thirst and urination, and contact your healthcare provider if these occur for potential adjustments to your medication or lifestyle. Serious side effects requiring immediate medical help include signs of kidney problems, joint pain, unusual skin blisters, heart failure symptoms (shortness of breath, swelling, fatigue, sudden weight gain), and symptoms of pancreatitis (persistent nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, severe pain).
Although rare, severe allergic reactions can occur, manifesting as rash, significant swelling, severe dizziness, or breathing difficulties. Seek medical help immediately if any of these symptoms arise. Always inform your healthcare provider about any new or unusual side effects you experience.
Interactions
Is Janumet the same as metformin?
Janumet is not the same as metformin. Janumet is a combination medication that contains both metformin and sitagliptin. Metformin is one of the active ingredients in Janumet, but Janumet also includes sitagliptin, which is another medication used to help control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
What are the disadvantages of Janumet?
Janumet, a combination of sitagliptin and metformin, may have several disadvantages or side effects. Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, diarrhea, and stomach upset. There is also a risk of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious condition, particularly in those with kidney problems. Additionally, it may cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when used with other diabetes medications. Patients with a history of pancreatitis should use it cautiously, as there is a potential risk of developing this condition. Regular monitoring and consultation with a healthcare provider are recommended to manage these risks effectively.
Is Janumet the same as Januvia?
Janumet and Januvia are not the same, but they are related. Januvia contains the active ingredient sitagliptin, which is used to help control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Janumet, on the other hand, is a combination medication that contains both sitagliptin and metformin. Metformin is another medication that helps control blood sugar levels. Therefore, while Januvia and Janumet both contain sitagliptin, Janumet also includes metformin for additional blood sugar control.
What is the difference between Janumet and metformin?
Janumet is a combination medication that contains two active ingredients: metformin and sitagliptin. Metformin is a medication that helps control blood sugar levels by decreasing glucose production in the liver and improving insulin sensitivity. Sitagliptin, on the other hand, is a DPP-4 inhibitor that works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones, which help to regulate insulin and glucagon production in response to meals. In contrast, metformin is a single-agent medication that only contains metformin as its active ingredient. It is often used as a first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes to help manage blood sugar levels. Janumet is typically prescribed when additional blood sugar control is needed beyond what metformin alone can provide.
Who should not take Janumet?
Janumet should not be taken by individuals who have severe kidney problems, metabolic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis. It is also contraindicated in those with a known hypersensitivity to metformin, sitagliptin, or any of the components of the medication. Additionally, it is not recommended for individuals with type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before taking Janumet.
