Vitamin D, including forms such as ergocalciferol (D2), cholecalciferol (D3), and alfacalcidol, is a crucial fat-soluble vitamin essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the body. It plays a vital role in building and maintaining strong bones and is used to treat and prevent bone-related disorders like rickets and osteomalacia. Additionally, when used in combination with calcium, it helps prevent bone loss known as osteoporosis. Vitamin D3 can be particularly beneficial for individuals who do not receive adequate sunlight exposure or have dietary deficiencies, as well as those with specific health conditions affecting vitamin D levels, such as liver or kidney issues. This vitamin also assists in maintaining normal calcium levels in individuals with certain medical conditions, including hypoparathyroidism and familial hypophosphatemia, and supports bone health in patients with kidney disease. Vitamin D supplements are often recommended for breastfed infants since breast milk typically contains low levels of this vitamin. It is generally safe when taken according to recommended dosages, and consultation with healthcare providers is advised for personalized medical guidance.

Vitamin D3 Warnings

This document outlines important safety information regarding the use of this medication. Please read the details carefully and consult your healthcare professional if you have any questions or concerns.

  • Risk of High Calcium or Vitamin D Levels: Avoid using Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) if you have elevated blood levels of calcium or vitamin D. Excessive intake of Vitamin D3 may lead to an accumulation of calcium in the bloodstream, posing a risk to kidney health. If you are taking Vitamin D3 to address low vitamin D levels or other diagnosed conditions, ensure all scheduled blood tests are completed promptly to allow your healthcare provider to monitor your vitamin D levels and adjust your dosage if necessary. Be alert to symptoms like persistent nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, constipation, muscle pain or stiffness, and changes in urination frequency or volume, as these may indicate excessive vitamin D intake and elevated calcium levels. Contact your healthcare provider promptly if you experience any of these symptoms.

  • Contraindications: This medication should not be used if you have any of the following conditions, as it may lead to serious health issues:

    • Elevated blood calcium levels
    • Elevated blood vitamin D levels
    • Malabsorption syndrome (a condition where the body cannot properly absorb nutrients) In case of any of these conditions, seek advice from your healthcare provider before commencing treatment with this medication.

Vitamin D3 Interactions

Some drugs that might interact with this vitamin include burosumab and phosphate binders. Be sure to read the labels on all your medications, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products, as they may have Calcium, Magnesium, phosphate, or Vitamin D in them. Consult your pharmacist to ensure safe usage of these products. Since vitamin D is quite similar to Calcitriol, avoid taking medications that contain calcitriol while using vitamin D.
