Pitolisant is used to treat narcolepsy, a condition that causes severe daytime sleepiness. It can decrease daytime sleepiness and also reduce the number of sudden short attacks of weak/paralyzed muscles (known as cataplexy) that can occur in people with narcolepsy. Pitolisant works by increasing histamine levels in the brain to make you more awake.

Interactions

This medication may decrease the effectiveness of hormonal birth control such as pills, patch, or ring. This could cause pregnancy. Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist if you should use reliable backup birth control methods while using pitolisant and for at least 21 days after stopping treatment with pitolisant. Also tell your doctor if you have any new spotting or breakthrough bleeding, because these may be signs that your birth control is not working well.
