Allergy Side Effects
You may experience mild side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, stomach upset, blurred vision, or a dry mouth, nose, or throat. These effects are usually temporary, but if they persist or worsen, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional. To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness, try rising slowly from sitting or lying down. For dry mouth, consider using sugarless hard candy, ice chips, gum, drinking water, or a saliva substitute. Note that if you are taking a sustained-release version of this medication, you may notice an empty tablet shell in your stool, which is normal and harmless.
While most people using this medication do not experience serious side effects, it is crucial to be aware of them. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience serious side effects such as mental or mood changes, difficulty urinating, or a fast or irregular heartbeat. In rare instances, very serious effects like seizures may occur, requiring urgent medical attention. Additionally, although a severe allergic reaction is rare, seek immediate help if you notice symptoms such as rash, severe dizziness, itching or swelling (particularly of the face, tongue, or throat), or trouble breathing.
This overview does not cover all possible side effects. If you notice any other unusual symptoms, contact your healthcare provider for further advice.
Interactions
Be aware that some products may interact with this medication. These include skin-applied antihistamines like diphenhydramine cream, ointment, or spray. It's important to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using other substances that may cause drowsiness. This includes opioid painkillers or cough suppressants such as codeine or hydrocodone, alcohol, marijuana, sleep or anxiety medications like alprazolam, lorazepam, or zolpidem, muscle relaxants such as carisoprodol or cyclobenzaprine, and other antihistamines like cetirizine or diphenhydramine.
Always check the labels of all your medications, including those for allergies or cold symptoms, to see if they contain ingredients that may cause drowsiness. Consult your pharmacist to ensure safe use of these products.
Chlorpheniramine is very similar to dexchlorpheniramine, so avoid using drugs containing dexchlorpheniramine while taking chlorpheniramine.
Additionally, this medication could interfere with certain laboratory tests, like allergy skin tests, potentially resulting in false outcomes. Be sure to inform lab technicians and all your healthcare providers that you are using this medication.
