Allergy Side Effects
When taking this medication, you may experience drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, stomach upset, blurred vision, or dryness in the mouth, nose, or throat. These side effects are generally mild, but if they persist or worsen, it is important to consult your healthcare provider. To prevent dizziness and lightheadedness, rise slowly from a sitting or lying position. For relief from dry mouth, try sucking on sugarless hard candy or ice chips, chewing sugarless gum, staying hydrated, or using a saliva substitute.
If you are using a sustained-release version of the medication, you might notice an empty tablet shell in your stool, which is harmless. While many users do not experience serious side effects, it is crucial to be aware of them. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience serious side effects such as mental or mood changes like restlessness or confusion, difficulty urinating, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.
In rare cases, this medication may cause very serious side effects, such as seizures, or a severe allergic reaction. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction include a rash, itching or swelling (particularly of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. This summary does not include all possible side effects. If you notice any other effects, reach out to your healthcare provider for advice.
Allergy Interactions
Some medications and products can interact with this drug and should be used cautiously. These include skin-applied antihistamines like diphenhydramine creams, ointments, or sprays. Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using other substances that can cause drowsiness. This includes opioid pain or cough medications (such as codeine or hydrocodone), alcohol, marijuana, sleep or anxiety medications (such as Alprazolam, Lorazepam, or Zolpidem), muscle relaxants (such as Carisoprodol or Cyclobenzaprine), and other antihistamines (such as Cetirizine or diphenhydramine).
Be sure to check the labels of all over-the-counter medicines, including allergy or cough-and-cold products, as they might contain ingredients that induce drowsiness. Consult your pharmacist to ensure safe use of these products.
Do not use medications containing Dexchlorpheniramine while taking chlorpheniramine, as they are very similar. Additionally, this drug might affect the results of certain lab tests, such as allergy skin tests, by causing false readings. Therefore, inform lab personnel and all your healthcare providers that you are using this medication.
