This medication is used to treat certain scalp conditions (dandruff, seborrhea). These scalp problems can sometimes be worsened by bacteria on the skin. This medication works by stopping the growth of certain skin bacteria. Sodium sulfacetamide belongs to a class of drugs known as sulfa antibiotics. Do not use this medication in children under 2 months old.

Side Effects

Although uncommon, irritation of the skin or scalp may occur. If this effect lasts or gets worse, stop using this medication and tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Using this medication for prolonged periods may result in a fungal skin infection. Contact your doctor if you notice new or worsening skin/scalp symptoms. Rarely, sodium sulfacetamide products applied to the skin may be absorbed and may cause serious side effects. Stop using this product and tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: aching/swollen joints, rash on nose and cheeks, signs of infection (such as sore throat that doesn't go away, fever), signs of anemia (such as unusual tiredness/weakness, rapid breathing, fast heartbeat), unusual bleeding/bruising, signs of liver problems (such as nausea that doesn't stop, dark urine, yellowing eyes/skin, stomach/abdominal pain, vomiting), mouth sores. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
