Anastrozole, also known by its brand name Arimidex, is a medication used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is particularly effective for early-stage hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer and for advanced or metastatic HR+ breast cancer. Additionally, it is used when breast cancer worsens after treatment with tamoxifen. Anastrozole works by inhibiting aromatase, an enzyme that converts other hormones into estrogen. By reducing estrogen levels, the drug helps to slow down or reverse the growth of certain breast cancer cells that rely on estrogen to grow. Anastrozole is administered orally, usually as a daily tablet, and common side effects may include hot flashes, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting.
