generic Aromasin

This medication is used to treat certain types of breast cancer (such as hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer) in women after menopause. Exemestane is also used to help prevent the cancer from returning. Some breast cancers are made to grow faster by a natural hormone called estrogen. Exemestane decreases the amount of estrogen the body makes and helps to slow or reverse the growth of these breast cancers. Exemestane is usually not used in women of childbearing age.

Exemestane FAQs
What does the drug exemestane do?

Exemestane is a medication that works by reducing the amount of estrogen in the body. It is primarily used to treat certain types of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. By lowering estrogen levels, exemestane helps slow or reverse the growth of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer.

Weight gain can be a potential side effect of exemestane, although it does not occur in everyone. Patients taking exemestane should monitor their weight and discuss any significant changes with their healthcare provider.

Exemestane is not a form of chemotherapy. It is a type of hormone therapy known as an aromatase inhibitor, used primarily to treat certain types of breast cancer by reducing estrogen levels in the body.

Tamoxifen and exemestane are both medications used in the treatment of breast cancer, but they work in different ways and are used in different scenarios.Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It works by binding to estrogen receptors on breast cancer cells, blocking estrogen from attaching to these receptors, which can slow or stop the growth of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer cells.Exemestane, on the other hand, is an aromatase inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzyme aromatase, which is responsible for converting androgens into estrogen in the body. This reduction in estrogen levels can help slow the growth of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. In summary, tamoxifen blocks estrogen receptors, while exemestane reduces estrogen production. Tamoxifen is often used in premenopausal and postmenopausal women, whereas exemestane is typically used in postmenopausal women.

Hormone therapy and chemotherapy are not the same. Hormone therapy involves the use of medications to block or lower the amount of hormones in the body to slow down or stop the growth of certain cancers, such as breast or prostate cancer. Chemotherapy, on the other hand, uses drugs to kill or stop the growth of cancer cells by targeting rapidly dividing cells. Each treatment has different mechanisms, purposes, and side effects.
