Warnings
Celecoxib, a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), may occasionally elevate the risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke. This risk can arise at any point during treatment, with prolonged use increasing its likelihood. The danger may be heightened for older adults or those with existing heart conditions or risk factors, such as smoking, a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes. It is important to avoid using this medication immediately before or after undergoing heart bypass surgery (CABG).
Additionally, celecoxib may rarely lead to severe, potentially life-threatening bleeding in the stomach or intestines, which can occur without any warning signs. This risk is also more pronounced in older individuals.
If you experience any of the following uncommon but severe side effects, discontinue use and seek medical attention immediately: persistent stomach or abdominal pain, bloody or black/tarry stools, vomit resembling coffee grounds, chest, jaw, or left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden changes in vision, or difficulty speaking.
It is crucial to discuss with your doctor or pharmacist the potential risks and benefits of using this medication to ensure it is appropriate for your condition.
Celebrex Side Effects
Experiencing stomach upset or gas is common and usually mild. If these symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional. Monitor your blood pressure regularly, as this medication may cause an increase. If you notice elevated readings, inform your healthcare provider. Although serious side effects are uncommon, watch for signs like pain, swelling, or warmth in the groin or calf, changes in urination, difficulty swallowing, or symptoms of heart failure such as swelling in the ankles or feet, unusual tiredness, or sudden weight gain, and seek medical advice promptly.
In rare cases, this medication can lead to severe liver issues. If you experience persistent nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine, intense stomach pain, or yellowing of the eyes or skin, seek medical attention immediately. Although a severe allergic reaction is rare, it is important to know the signs, which include fever, swollen lymph nodes, rash, itching or swelling (particularly of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. If any of these occur, obtain medical help promptly.
This overview does not cover all potential side effects. If you experience symptoms not mentioned here, contact your healthcare provider for guidance.
Interactions
This drug can interact with certain other medications. It may react with aliskiren, ACE inhibitors like captopril or lisinopril, and angiotensin II receptor blockers such as valsartan or losartan. It can also interact with cidofovir, lithium, and diuretics, including furosemide. Additionally, this medication might increase bleeding risk if used with other drugs that cause bleeding, like anti-platelet medications such as clopidogrel and anticoagulants, also known as blood thinners, such as dabigatran, enoxaparin, or warfarin.
Be cautious with over-the-counter and prescription medications, as many contain pain relievers or fever reducers like aspirin and NSAIDs, such as naproxen or ibuprofen, which are similar to celecoxib. Combining these can heighten the risk of side effects. If your doctor has recommended low-dose aspirin (81-162 milligrams daily) for heart attack or stroke prevention, continue your regimen unless advised otherwise by your doctor. For further guidance, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
