Warnings
Celecoxib, like other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), may infrequently elevate the risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke. This increased risk can occur at any point during use, though it is more pronounced with prolonged usage. The likelihood of such events is higher in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or risk factors such as aging, smoking, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Usage of this medication is not advised immediately before or after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
Additionally, celecoxib may occasionally lead to serious, potentially fatal, gastrointestinal bleeding. This can occur without any prior symptoms and at any time during treatment, with older adults being at a heightened risk.
Discontinue use of celecoxib and seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following uncommon but severe side effects: persistent stomach or abdominal pain, blood in stools or black/tarry stools, vomit resembling coffee grounds, pain in the chest, jaw, or left arm, difficulty breathing, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden changes in vision, or difficulty speaking.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist to thoroughly discuss the potential risks and benefits associated with using this medication.
Celecoxib Side Effects
Experiencing stomach upset or gas is common and usually not a cause for concern. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen, it's important to consult your healthcare provider. Regular monitoring of your blood pressure is recommended since this medication may elevate it. Report any high readings to your healthcare provider for further guidance.
Be vigilant for serious side effects such as pain, swelling, or warmth in the groin or calf, which could indicate a more serious condition. Additionally, watch for signs of kidney issues, such as changes in urine output, or symptoms of heart failure, like swollen ankles, unusual tiredness, or sudden weight gain, and report these immediately.
Though rare, this medication can cause severe liver damage. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience persistent nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine, severe stomach pain, or yellowing of the eyes or skin. Allergic reactions, while very rare, are serious and require immediate medical help if you notice symptoms like fever, swollen lymph nodes, rash, itching, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
This summary does not include all possible side effects. If you experience any unusual symptoms, reach out to your healthcare provider for advice.
