Bimatoprost is used to treat high pressure inside the eye due to glaucoma (open-angle type) or other eye diseases (such as ocular hypertension). Lowering high pressure inside the eye can help prevent blindness. This medication works by regulating the flow of fluid within the eye to maintain a normal pressure.

Lumigan Side Effects

Burning/stinging/irritation/redness of the eye, feeling as if something is in your eye, dry eyes, watering eyes, and increased sensitivity to light may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This medication may slowly (over months to years) cause brown discoloration of the colored portion of the eye (iris). If you are using bimatoprost in only one eye, only that iris may change color. An increase in eyelash number/length/thickness, darkening of the eyelashes/eyelids, or eyelid changes may also occur in the treated eye. These changes may be permanent, but the long-term effects are uncertain. Notify your doctor if this occurs, and schedule regular eye exams to monitor it. Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: vision changes, eye pain/swelling, swelling/redness of the eyelids. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. In the US - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or at www.fda.gov/medwatch. In Canada - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to Health Canada at 1-866-234-2345.

Lumigan FAQs
What is the drug Lumigan used for?

Lumigan is used to reduce intraocular pressure in individuals with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It helps to prevent damage to the optic nerve and potential vision loss by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor from the eye.

Lumigan and Latanoprost are not the same medication, although they are both used to treat elevated intraocular pressure in conditions like glaucoma. Lumigan contains the active ingredient bimatoprost, while Latanoprost is the active ingredient in another medication. Both belong to a class of drugs known as prostaglandin analogs, but they are distinct compounds with different chemical structures.

The generic name for latanoprost is latanoprost itself. It is both the generic and the active ingredient name.

Lumigan (bimatoprost) can lower intraocular pressure by approximately 25% to 33% from baseline levels in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The exact reduction can vary depending on individual response and baseline pressure.

It is generally not recommended to use latanoprost and Lumigan together. Both medications are prostaglandin analogs used to lower intraocular pressure in conditions like glaucoma. Using them simultaneously may not provide additional benefit and could increase the risk of side effects. It is important to consult with an eye care professional before combining these medications.
