Mesalamine ER Warnings
This medication comes with important safety and warning information that you should carefully consider. Please consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
Kidney Issues: Mesalamine may lead to kidney complications such as kidney stones, damage, or even failure. Those with a history of kidney problems or who are using other kidney-affecting drugs, like NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen), are at a higher risk. Inform your healthcare provider about your medical history and all medications you are currently taking or planning to take.
Abnormal Reaction: Some individuals may experience acute intolerance syndrome, which can mimic ulcerative colitis symptoms. Watch for stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, fever, headache, and rash. If these occur, contact your healthcare provider, as you might need to discontinue the medication.
Liver Concerns: Although rare, mesalamine can cause liver issues or worsen existing liver conditions, potentially leading to liver failure. Notify your healthcare provider if you have liver problems prior to starting treatment, and seek immediate medical attention if you observe symptoms like jaundice, dark urine, fatigue, or pain on the right side of your abdomen.
Allergic Reactions and Severe Skin Reactions: Allergic reactions to mesalamine can be serious and potentially life-threatening. Symptoms might include breathing difficulties, severe rash, or organ involvement. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience itching, hives, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or eyes. If you have previously reacted to sulfasalazine, inform your healthcare provider.
Iron Content: Some mesalamine tablets and capsules contain iron oxide. If you are taking iron supplements or have conditions that increase your risk of iron overload, discuss this with your healthcare provider to avoid excess iron intake.
Phenylketonuria Caution: The Apriso extended-release capsules contain phenylalanine, which can be harmful to individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU). If you have PKU, consult your healthcare provider for an alternative form of mesalamine.
Contraindications: Do not use this medication if you are allergic to aspirin or other salicylates. Consult your healthcare provider if this applies to you.
