Sevelamer, commonly known by its brand name Renvela, is a medication used to reduce high blood phosphate levels in individuals aged 6 and up with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are on dialysis. This condition is common because dialysis alone cannot remove enough phosphate to maintain balance. By lowering phosphate levels, Sevelamer helps protect your bones and reduces the risk of mineral buildup in your body, potentially decreasing the risk of heart disease and strokes. Sevelamer functions as a phosphate binder, attaching to phosphate present in the food within your stomach. This process prevents the phosphate from being absorbed into your body, allowing it to be excreted instead, thereby lowering your blood phosphate levels. The medication is available in two forms: a tablet that is swallowed whole and a powder that can be mixed into a liquid suspension. Both forms are available as cost-effective generics. It's important to note that some patients may experience gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain.
