Dialysis alone may not sufficiently lower phosphate levels, and this is where Sevelamer proves beneficial. It functions as a phosphate binder by attaching to phosphate from the diet within the stomach, preventing its absorption into the bloodstream. This process helps maintain balanced phosphate levels, supporting bone health and reducing the risk of mineral buildup, heart disease, and strokes.
