Adlarity Warnings
The following safety information highlights critical warnings and precautions for those using Adlarity (donepezil). Please review these details carefully and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
Skin Reactions at Application Site: You may experience mild skin reactions such as redness or swelling at the site where Adlarity is applied. In rare instances, more severe allergic reactions like spreading rashes, swelling, skin peeling, or blistering may occur. Stop using the medication and contact your healthcare provider immediately if these severe symptoms develop or persist for over 48 hours after removing the patch.
Heart Rate and Fainting: Adlarity has the potential to slow your heart rate and cause heart block, even in the absence of prior heart issues. Report any occurrences of dizziness, breathing difficulties, palpitations, nausea, or fainting to your healthcare provider promptly.
Gastrointestinal Issues: Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are possible side effects, especially when beginning treatment or increasing dosage. These symptoms usually resolve within 1-3 weeks. Stay hydrated if you experience diarrhea or vomiting, and seek medical attention if nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea is severe or persistent.
Stomach Bleeding and Ulcers: There is a risk of stomach bleeding and ulcers due to increased stomach acid production. Exercise caution if you have a history of ulcers or are using medications like ibuprofen or naproxen, which can increase this risk. Symptoms such as coffee ground-like vomit or dark, tarry stools require immediate medical intervention.
Seizure Risk: Adlarity may increase the risk of seizures by affecting brain activity. Inform caregivers about this risk, and contact your healthcare provider if a seizure occurs or if you experience symptoms such as confusion, limpness, or stiffness.
Lung Problems: If you have a history of asthma or lung conditions, Adlarity can exacerbate these issues by causing airway constriction or increased mucus production. Notify your healthcare provider if your respiratory symptoms worsen, or if you experience shortness of breath, wheezing, or coughing.
Contraindications: Do not use Adlarity if you have a history of allergic reactions to donepezil (Aricept) or piperidine-based medications, or if you have previously had an allergic skin reaction to Adlarity. Always consult your healthcare provider if these conditions apply to you.
Adlarity Side Effects
When taking this medication, you might experience some common side effects as your body adjusts. These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, dizziness, tiredness, trouble sleeping, or muscle cramps. Often, these symptoms are mild and tend to subside within a few weeks. You may also notice redness, itching, or irritation where the medication is applied. Headaches, stomach pain, and muscle spasms have been reported by some individuals, along with constipation and unusual dreams. It's important to consult your healthcare provider if these symptoms persist or worsen.
While serious side effects are rare, they warrant immediate medical attention. These include severe stomach pain, black stools, vomit resembling coffee grounds, or trouble urinating. Additionally, any instances of slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, or seizures should be treated as medical emergencies. Though uncommon, severe allergic reactions can occur, characterized by rash, swelling (notably of the face, tongue, or throat), and difficulty breathing. If you notice these signs, seek urgent medical care. It's important to remain vigilant and communicate any unexpected effects to your healthcare provider.
Adlarity Interactions
What is adlarity used for?
Adlarity is used for the treatment of mild to moderate dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease. It is a transdermal patch that delivers donepezil, which is a medication that helps improve cognitive function and slow the progression of symptoms in individuals with Alzheimer's.
How does adlarity work?
Adlarity is a transdermal patch that delivers donepezil, a medication used to treat symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. It works by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down acetylcholine in the brain. By preventing this breakdown, Adlarity helps increase the levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for memory and cognitive function, thereby potentially improving or stabilizing symptoms in individuals with Alzheimer's disease.
