Chlorpromazine Side Effects

Taking this medication might lead to some mild side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, dry mouth, blurred vision, tiredness, nausea, constipation, weight gain, or trouble sleeping. These are generally not serious, but if they persist or worsen, you should inform your healthcare provider. To avoid dizziness and reduce the risk of falling, rise slowly from sitting or lying positions.

There are some side effects that require more immediate attention. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience muscle spasms, stiffness, tremors, restlessness, facial expression changes, drooling, trouble swallowing, or a shuffling walk. In some cases, an additional medication might be needed to manage these effects.

Serious side effects, although uncommon, need urgent attention. These include skin discoloration, vision changes, liver disease signs (persistent nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine), infection signs (persistent sore throat, chills, cough), easy bruising/bleeding, and mood changes. Rarely, involuntary movements such as lip smacking or unusual arm/leg movements may develop and could be permanent.

In rare instances, an increase in prolactin levels may occur, leading to symptoms such as unwanted breast milk or changes in menstrual periods for females, and decreased sexual ability or enlarged breasts for males. A prolonged erection in males requires immediate medical attention.

Seek immediate medical help if you encounter severe dizziness, fainting, slow or shallow breathing, or symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), which include fever, severe muscle stiffness, extreme tiredness, confusion, sweating, fast/irregular heartbeat, dark urine, or kidney problems. Allergic reactions are rare but serious, characterized by rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

This overview does not cover all potential side effects. If you notice anything unusual, consult your healthcare provider.

Interactions

This medication may interact with certain other drugs, including lithium and tretinoin. Additionally, many medications, not just chlorpromazine, can affect heart rhythm by causing QT prolongation. These include amiodarone, dofetilide, pimozide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol, and macrolide antibiotics like erythromycin, among others. Using this drug with substances that also cause drowsiness or breathing issues might increase the risk of severe side effects, such as slow or shallow breathing and significant drowsiness or dizziness. Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using opioids for pain or cough (like codeine or hydrocodone), alcohol, marijuana, sleep or anxiety medications (such as alprazolam, lorazepam, or zolpidem), muscle relaxants (like carisoprodol or cyclobenzaprine), or antihistamines (such as cetirizine or diphenhydramine). Always check the labels of your medications, including those for allergies or colds, as they might contain ingredients that cause drowsiness. Consult your pharmacist on using these products safely. This medication may also interfere with specific lab tests, like certain pregnancy or phenylketonuria tests, potentially leading to false results. Ensure that all lab personnel and your healthcare providers are aware of your use of this medication.
